Student of the Month Story
On March 5 at James Bowie High School, Grace Golson was chosen as the the student of the month for her excellence in cow roping.
Grace, a sophomore here at Bowie, was chosen at random out of a group of nominees for the title of student of the month but she wasn’t too happy about it.
“I don’t like it. I think I was chosen at random,” student of the month Grace Golson said.
Grace was asked about what her favorite class is. Her answer was not surprising considering that she is a star cow roper.
“My favorite class is cow roping because I like roping cows,” Grace said.
However, it seems that cow roping might be all Grace likes.
“My least favorite class is not cow roping because I’m not roping cows,” Grace said.
Grace was nominated for student of the month for a reason. Ms. Shirley, the head cow roping coach, was asked why she decided to nominate Grace.
“I couldn’t not nominate her. I’ve never seen such pure cow roping talent in all my life,” cow roping coach Ms. Shirley said.
We also asked Grace’s mom, Mrs. Golson, about Grace’s journey as a cow roper.
“Grace started cow roping when she was just six years old. Ever since she started I always knew there was something special about her connection with the cows,” Grace’s mom Mrs. Golson said.
Grace’s deep investment in her cows could definitely be a reason for the very unique connections she has with them.
“I’m taking cow for my language so I can talk to my cows while I rope them,” Grace said.
As of right now, it seems that Grace wants to take her cow roping talent all the way to the big leagues.
“My goal for after high school is to become a professional cow roper,” Grace said.
However, when asked if she does any extracurriculars, Grace revealed that cows are not the only animal she ropes.
“I do sheep roping outside of school,” Grace said.
Grace was also asked about the electives she is taking this year. Because of her love for animal roping, her answer was not surprise.
“My favorite elective is definitely pig roping,” Grace said.
Grace’s love for her cows seems to be never ending and Bowie’s head cow roping coach Ms. Shirley just can’t get enough of her natural way with cows.
“She’s like a cow whisperer. If anyone deserves to be student of the month, it’s definitely Grace Golson,” Ms. Shirley said.
