Fall Final Extra Credit
1. Ki Suk Han was a 58 year old man. He was at the subway station when he was pushed by a panhandler onto the tracks. A photographer, R. Umar Abbasi was also there and he captured a picture of the unfortunate moment.
9. One part of a response that stood out the most to me was "What an age we live in when getting the picture is more important!" I think this completely sums up the way I feel about this. With the way today's world is, this photographer felt it was more important to capture the picture on a piece of technology rather than try and save someone's life.
2. Abbasi claims that when he was not able to physically help Han, he decided to try and use his camera flash to warn the oncoming subway train.
3. Personally, I don't think the photographer should've taken the photo. He should have been more concerned with helping the man than getting a good headline and cover photo for a magazine.
4. I do not think that what the photographer did was the best that he could've done in that situation. I think that even if he was for some reason unable to help Han, he could've gotten other people around him to try and help. He needed to focus more on getting the poor man out of the tracks instead of trying to warn a train that had no way to stop in time.
5. I disagree with the decision to put the photo on the cover of the magazine. The picture was taken right before that man tragically died. I think it is disrespectful to him and his family to put that photo all over the public.
6. To a photojournalist, getting images of life as it happens is more important. Photojournalists are so caught up in getting a good and real photo. They are more concerned about whether or not the photo is okay than whether or not the people in the photo are okay.
7. I don't think it is ethical for a photographer to get involved in their photo. If they are trying to get a photo of real life as it happens, they should just let life happen and not intervene. Unless of course it is a life or death situation. That is a whole other thing that I think shouldn't even be photographed at all.
8. I think there are certain times when it is okay for a photographer to get involved in a photo. For example, if someone is dying, they should definitely get involved. However, if a photographer is going to market a photo as taken in real life, it should just be of real life and the photographer should not get involved.
